The Exhibition Centre, New Delhi, wrapped in a GFRC jali facade

Overview

The building is wrapped in a continuous GFRC jali: a fine perforated pattern that runs across every face, broken only by tall slot windows.

Panels repeat the pattern exactly, so the screen reads as one surface from street level, and the jali filters daylight into the halls behind.

Project stages

1. Analysis

The facade was set out into a panel grid that keeps the jali pattern unbroken across joints and around the slot windows.

2. Design

The jali pattern and panel edges were modelled so every perforation lines up from panel to panel and at the corners.

3. Development

Pattern molds were machined, panels were cast and finished, and the screen was hung panel by panel on the building frame.
